Sally Jane Hill Mayberry, 94, of Crossville, passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2019, at her home. She is predeceased by her husband, William Eston Mayberry Jr.
Sally was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Crab Orchard, daughter of George Lester Hill Sr. and Susie Ellen (Kemmer) Hill. She is predeceased by her parents, as well as an older brother, George Lester Hill Jr.; an older sister, Mary Frances (Hill) McGough; and a younger brother, James Elmo "Cotton" Hill.
In 1928, she moved with her family to Crossville and grew up in her family home on Jamestown Highway. She attended Woodlawn School, transferred to the Cumberland Mountain School and later to Cumberland County High School where she graduated in May 1942.
In August of 1942, Sally married William E. Mayberry Jr. "Bill" and started her freshman year at the University of Tennessee that same fall. She graduated in the spring of 1946 with a degree in home economics.
The following year they were blessed with their firstborn, William, with Susan and James following in later years. Sally spent many years making her house into a home where other children also felt welcomed and cared for. She even extended that love for others by taking in children from less fortunate circumstances, supporting their higher education and staying involved throughout their young adult years.
Together with Bill, they owned and operated W.E. Mayberry and Son Furniture and Jewelry Store on Main Street and opened the first Dollar General Store in Crossville. She worked as an interior designer for Mayberry's Furniture, taking pride in her work with many families throughout the area.
Sally was a dedicated Christian and active member of the Crossville First United Methodist Church for over 75 years, serving in many capacities, sharing her gifts and talents.
She is survived by her sons, William E. (Judy) Mayberry III of Bradenton, FL, and James (Vicki) Mayberry of Crossville; daughter, Susan (Steve) Mayberry Smartt of Nashville; nine grandchildren, Allyson (Todd) Mayberry Lewis, William (Tammi) Eston Mayberry IV, Sally Kathryn (Jim) Mayberry Freund, Stephanie (Kyle) Smartt Heckman, Stuart (Candace) Hill Smartt, Nicholas (Ivy) Mayberry, Leslie Mayberry, Josh (Casha) Mayberry and Andrew Mayberry; 18 great-grandchildren, Sarah, Gracie and Nathan Lewis, William and Emerson Mayberry, James and Max Freund, Matthew Heckman, Ava and Samuel Smartt, Preston, Knox and Sophie Mayberry, J'Lyn Norrod, Kershaw Kerley, Braxton and Parks Mayberry, and Dysen Mayberry; and sister-in-law, Martha Brock Hill.
Sally's family wants to thank Mary Wilson who was her faithful caregiver for nine years, and Tess Gilbert who was at her side at her passing, both of whom loved her like their own family. They also wanted to thank those caregivers who took care of her over the years and who provided her with love and comfort.
Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jerry Mayo and Rev. Louis Davis officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service at the church from noon to 2 p.m., with interment at Green Acres Memory Gardens following.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Crossville First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Cumberland County.
