Rev. Hodges was instrumental in the creation of the Buckland Public Library, Buckland, Franklin County, Mass. where he served as pastor. "In the year 1889 the late LeBaron D. Ruddock of Buckland died, leaving a legacy for the nucleus of a church library fund. Reverend Alpheus C. Hodges, a man of vision, saw here an opportunity to stress the need for a public library building. He therefore offered to give one thousand dollars if the people in town would raise a like amount..."

Graduated Rochester Free Academy 1869; Yale 1877; and Connecticut Theological Institute, 1881. Studied at Rochester University one year. In business in Boston three years. Ordained by Congregational Conference, at Buckland, Mass., Nov. 16, 1881; p.c. Buckland, Mass. 1881-97; p. Canaan Four Corners, N.Y., 1897 until death. Became editor of Berkshire Evangel, December, 1898. Also editor of Our Country Church, Connecticut Valley Evangel, Springfield District Methodist, Empire State Evangel. Active in Chautauqua, Endeavor and Sunday-school work. Married in Dorchester, Mass. May 4, 1893 Elinor R. daughter of Edmund and Sarah Maria (Redfern) Squire. Four children, all living. Died of heart failure, at Caanan, N.Y., Dec. 24, 1906, aged 53 years 10 months 23 days.
