"Ben Winstead Cannon, retired business administrator of First United Methodist Church of Corpus Christi, died November 5, 2003 at 99. Ben was born in Crockett, Texas on May 24, 1904. He was next to the youngest of eight sons and two daughters born to Wesley Ezekiel and Letty Lura Webb Cannon. He married Mildred Armede Wilds on February 26, 1936. When Mildred died in 2000, Ben said they had remained sweethearts for 65 years.

When Ben was 11 years old his parents bought a farm near Bishop. He attended Bishop schools through his sophomore year, then spent his junior and senior years in Del Rio, where he was captain of a championship football team coached by his brother Bobby. After a year out of school working for the King Ranch, he spent a term at Lon Morris College, and three years at the University of Texas. Ben worked his way through the University as a counselor at the State School for the Deaf, working at a "Pig Stand" barbecue place in south Austin, and officiating both basketball and football for high schools and colleges. After a stint in banking (ended by the Great Depression), and a career in the automobile and insurance industries.

Ben spent 33 years as business administrator for some of the larger Methodist churches in Texas, including Marvin Methodist in Tyler, Bay City Methodist and Moody Memorial Methodist in Galveston. He retired at 80 after 19 years as administrative assistant at First United Methodist Corpus Christi. Ben was a 45+ year Legion of Honor Kiwanian with 26 years perfect attendance; he served as secretary, treasurer, president and Lt. Governor. Ben was one of the founders of Charlie's Place, the Coastal Ben Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Center. He was a member of the board of directors for over 27 years, and served as president three times. Ben was made Director Emeritus in 1995. Ben was a medallion recipient of the 1999 Jefferson Award for outstanding contributions for the betterment of the citizens of South Texas.

His wife of Mildred Wilds Cannon preceded Ben in Death.
