Sam Smith, age 94, also known as "Smitty" Passed away at his residence on July 19, 2019 with his wife by his side. Sam was born on October 14, 1924 in Blytheville, AR, the son of Henry Smith and Sara Vanhook.

While visiting family in Tennessee Smitty met the love of his life, Lurlene Jackson. In 1949, they united in marriage and resided in Tennessee where 8 children were born. They later relocated to Chicago, IL in 1961 where 2 of the youngest children were born, and they rounded out their family with 10 children.

Smitty moved his family to Kalamazoo in 1971. He began working at Burroughs Corporation for several years, until in 1978 he started his own business, Smitty Tow Service. He loved working on cars just as much as he enjoyed towing them. You could always find him at Speedway racetrack enjoying the car races or working towing cars. Sam also enjoyed traveling, family cook-outs, fishing and walking his dogs, Chewy and Piggy.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Smith and Sara Smith; 3 brothers, Charlie Smith, Willie Smith and John Smith; 2 sisters, Alberta Jones and Rosette Smith; 5 children: Freddie George, Mary Jo Smith and Shirley White; 1 grandson, Samuel Smith and 1 daughter, Jacqueline E. Smith.

Sam leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife of 70 years. Lurlene Smith; his children, Sammy, Robert, Jerry (Mary), Michael (Nicole), Randy (Ida), Ricky, Prince Johnson all of Kalamazoo, MI; and Geraldine Smith-Hughes of Pittsburgh, PA.

Also, a special godson, Bob Pitchford of Kalamazoo. Sam had much love watching 4 generations of grandchildren grow: 41 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; 86 great-great grandchildren; and 24 great-great- great grandchildren. He also leaves several relatives and friends who will greatly miss him.
