Roger H. (Bruesewitz) Bruce, 83, died Monday, June 25, 2007, at the VA Hospital in Gainesville, Fla.

Roger was born in Eau Claire on Feb. 14, 1924, the son of Herman and Amanda (Kersten) Bruesewitz. He was baptized on March 16, 1924, at Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. He was confirmed on May 22, 1938. He served in the 263rd Platoon of the United States Marine Corps during World War II, and participated in the defense of Midway Island and the invasion of the Marshall Islands.

Roger was a farrier (horse shoer) by trade, and loved horses. He was proud of the fact that he rode a horse known as The Rosecroft to victory at a harness race at the Clark County Fairgrounds. Roger went to school for horse shoeing at Michigan State College. He served an apprenticeship with Peter Henningsen. He is honored in the Horse Shoeing Hall of Fame in Sulphur, Okla. On display there he has a handmade horseshoe representing the state of Minnesota. Roger lived in Maple Plain, Minn., for many years. He was honored for his work by the Minnesota Farrier's Association. Five years ago, he moved to Florida. He worked shoeing horses until the age of 79, and was the oldest active farrier in the state of Minnesota until he moved to Florida.

Survivors include two nieces and a nephew, Judy Rosenberg of Waukesha, Bonnie (Jim) Wendt of Midland, Mich., and Richard (Karen) Bruesewitz of Wauwatosa; seven great-nieces and -nephews; several great-great-nieces and -nephews; cousins and other relatives; and his special great-niece, Amanda (Jeremy) Ahrndt, of Milwaukee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Marshall and Modest.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral Chapel, 535 S. Hillcrest Parkway (U.S. 12 East) in Altoona, with the Rev. Larry Borgelt officiating. Interment will be in Trinity Cemetery, Fall Creek. Family and friends may call an hour before services on Saturday at the funeral chapel.
