Mother of 1065899 Sgt (Navigator) John McFarland Acheson of 460 (R.A.A.F.) Squadron RAF Binbrook, Lincolnshire.
He was the navigator on Lancaster Mklll W4987 which left it's base on the night of Saturday - Sunday 24th/25th July 1943 on the first day of "Operation Gomorrah", the intensive bombing of Hamburg.
At about 02.00 they were attacked by a Me.109 flown by Unteroffizier Willi Berg of the No.7./NJG 3 based at Kastrup airfield, Denmark.
The Lancaster was shot down and crashed at Duhnen, Cuxhaven on the German coast. None of the crew survived.
They are buried together in
collective grave 27. at H.9-14 Becklingen War Cemetery, Soltau, Heidekreis, Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), Germany
