Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother and Marine.
David was born on July 25, 1947 in Clinton, South Carolina to the late Ray Godfrey and Ruth King Godfrey. His life was met with many challenges and obstacles that he faced with tremendous strength and courage. David served his country in Vietnam with the Marine Corps earning the Purple Heart for being wounded in combat. He later attended Lander University where he earned a BS in Business. He held positions in management and consulting for forty years.
His wife Gail was his best friend and brought immense joy into his life. They have shared sixteen years of marriage. When they married their family grew to include six children with their spouses and eleven grandchildren. Together they enjoyed traveling and late night talks. They faithfully attended Christ Place Church where they were active with their loving Pethel Bible Fellowship class who have been an anchor of support for them during the difficult times.
David loved his children and grandchildren. He instilled in them a strong work ethic, always encouraging them to work to the best of their ability and was so proud of each of their accomplishments, big and small!
He grew up with a special bond with his brothers, James and Darrell. He also had another band of brothers within the Marines. His fellow veterans in the Upper Chattahoochee Marine Corps League #665 were among those he loved and served alongside.
He held positions of Judge Adjutant, Jr. Vice Commandant, and Sr. Vice Commandant before becoming the Commandant in May of 2014 in his Marine Corps League. David was also a Mason and a Shriner.
He is preceded by his parents, Ray and Ruth Godfrey. Survived by his wife, Gail Godfrey; son, David Lynn Godfrey, Jr. (Kimberly), Gainesville, GA; daughters, Chara Godfrey Hosom (Sam), Spartanburg, SC, Merissa Godfrey Ramantanin (Johnny), Spartanburg, SC, Jeanna Garrett Israel (Tim), Dacula, GA, Stacy Garrett Norris (Chris), St. Johns, FL, Heidi Garrett Ferguson (Todd), Gainesville, GA; brothers, James Godfrey and Darrell Godfrey; brother-in-law, Steven Wright, 11 grandchildren and other relatives also survive.
