Obituary for Kenneth Cyrus Wooten

Kenneth Cyrus Wooten, 90, of Harmony, N.C. went home to be with his Lord Tuesday, January 22, 2019, following a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Bell Wooten and his daughter, Sheila Thompson of Roanoke, VA; sons Barry Wooten, Dale Wooten (Pam) and Todd Wooten (Patti) of Statesville. He is further survived by his stepdaughter Melody Reed (Isaac). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Abby Booth, Christopher Jones, Trevor Jones, Jennifer Holland, Billy Wooten, Cyrus Wooten, Attrie Killian, Preston Wooten, Brielle Wooten, Josh Wooten, Scott Wooten, Patrick Wooten, and Cheyenne Reed, and 16 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Bozie.

Born January 1, 1929, in Union Grove, N.C., he was the son of the late William Cyrus Wooten and Attrie York Wooten. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Brown Wooten, and son Jerry Lane Wooten. He was further preceded in death by his siblings, Wardie Wooten, Gertie Hepler, Otho Wooten, Thelma Mullis, Denver Wooten, Verdie Jenkins, Buren Wooten, Ethel Blackwelder, Hazel Ladd, Effie Sheets, and Parks Wooten.

While serving in the Korean War, Mr. Wooten became skilled at working on flight instruments, leading to his future in watch repair and later in the jewelry business. Moving back to N. C. after being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Mr. Wooten began a career in the jewelry business. In 1974 he founded Wooten Jewelers, growing it to a chain of 17 retail stores before downsizing and retiring in 1999. Quite the entrepreneur, in addition to the jewelry business, he was also in the construction, nursing home, auto, insurance, funeral home, and monument businesses. In 1976 he received the North Carolina Retailer of the Year award. He also served as a founding director on the Bank of Iredell Board of Directors and a director on the Board of Asheville Federal Savings and Loan.

He was a member of Vanderburg United Methodist Church in Mooresville, N.C., the place he called home for many years with his first wife, Lola, as they raised their four children While at Vanderburg, he served on various church committees and as a lay leader.

Mr. Wooten served in various civic and charitable organizations in Iredell County. He was Chairman of the Iredell County School Board from 1972 – 1982. He was a former President of the Carolina Dogwood Festival Pageant and 50-year sponsor of the crown for the event. He was instrumental in founding the Tri-County Medical Park in Harmony, The Cup of Water, and the Lake Norman Shriners’ Club. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and former member of the Mooresville Rotary Club with a 32-year perfect attendance record.

He was a generous individual who was passionate about helping others. The following quote by John Wesley characterizes the life Mr. Wooten lived – “Do all the good you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can as long as ever you can.”

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 25, 2019, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville, N.C. A service celebrating the life of Mr. Wooten will be held at Union Grove United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Joe Parker and Rev. Cowles Bristol, III officiating. Mr. Wooten’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to Union Grove United Methodist Church, 1331 Sloan’s Mill Road, Union Grove, N.C. 28689.
