Bene was the son of Jacob Tumin and Ida Garber. He married Lizzie Abrams in Seattle on November 6, 1898. They had four sons over the next decade - Isadore Irving, Frank, Elliott, and Hiram Morris Benjamin. Bene operated several stores on Pacific Avenue in Tacoma under the name L. Benjamin and Company, specializing in supplying clothing for seamen. His store was known as a place where ship's captains could swap stories, and they often wrote letters to him regarding their travels. After Lizzie's death, Bene lived for decades in the Winthrop Hotel, selling wholesale cigarettes for ship's stores. His sister, Anne Tumin Stone, died in Chicago in 1973.
