"Mary Roller" was a sister of my great-great-grandfather, Martin Neiss. She was baptized "Maria Gertrude Neis(s)" , in (probably) Weiersbach, Kreis Daun, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. She had a long and interesting life, outliving 3 husbands. Her first 2 husbands were brothers - Johann Jacob Dreis (1811-1843) and Peter Joseph Dreis (1820-1859). She had 2 sons with her first husband, and 4 daughters and 1 son with her second husband. She married Liborius Roller (1819-1901) in 1867. Liborius was a widower with children of his own.
The Dreis family lived in the now-defunct village of Allscheid, which has a story of its own. All the villagers were forced to leave the village and it was razed. Most sailed for the U.S. Maria Gertrude and her second husband and 6 of the children arrived in New York on 03 Sep 1852. They were in St. Paul before the Territorial Census of Sep 1857. Her oldest son, John Dreis (1840-1864) died in the Civil War and is buried in Memphis. Her daughter, Marie Margaretha Dreis Scheffer (1848-1915) was the 1886 Carnival Queen for the St. Paul Winter Carnival. Maria Gertrude's granddaughter, Marie Scheffer (1873-1933) married into the noted Hamm family. Contributor 48170286
