James Hollis Barker
MT. HOLLY -- Mr. Barker, 84, of 14526 Lucia Riverbend Highway, died April 16, 2007 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was born in Gaston County, son of the late Lester F. and Laura Kelly Barker, and was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Buford and Clyde Barker.
Mr. Barker served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, serving as a top gunner on a B24 bomber, flew 41 missions, was shot down and served as a POW for 11 months, and received the Purple Heart. He was a retired Postal Clerk, member of the Mt. Holly VFW and a member of the N.A.R.F.E., was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Holly, the Lucia-Riverbend Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years, where he served as Fireman, Assistant Chief and Chief, and was current President of the Board of Directors.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Helen Sherrill Barker; a daughter, Donna Barker Murphy of Gastonia; a son, James Larry Barker and wife, Vicky, of Mt. Holly; a sister, Mildred Barker Culpepper of Mt. Holly; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a great great grandchild.
Funeral service conducted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Kimel and Rev. Mitch Murrow will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30-3:00 PM. Pallbearers will be Gary and Mike Jones, Bob and Bill Barker, Kevin and Keith Sherrill. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Lucia-Riverbend Volunteer Fire Department.
