Flyer Kills Child.
Sunday Mrs. Bettie Gross, living a block north of the ice plant, in company with her little son and daughter, aged six and four respectively, walked up to Squaw hollow after pecans. They had eaten a picnic lunch and were returning home, walking on the track, when they were overtaken by the south bound flyer, in the cut north of town. The wind was blowing a gale and they did not hear the train until it was almost upon them. The mother shouted to the children to jump off the track on the west side while she jumped off to the east. The little boy escaped but the little girl was caught by the engine and instantly killed.
The body of the little girl was thrown down the embankment and fell on her little brother, who was unharmed.
This was certainly a tragic ending to a day of pleasure for the little family. The accident occurred about 1 o’clock. The flyer due in Pryor at 9:35 was running late.
Alice May Gross was born July 18, 1913, at Parsons, Kansas. Died at Pryor, Oklahoma, October 28, 1917, aged 4 years, 3 months and 10 days.
Alice was a good girl and we extend to the bereaved ones sympathy and commend them to the One who knows all things best. Rev. Thos. A. Harkins conducted the funeral at the family residence and interment was made at the family burying ground, north of Adair.
