Lil attended country school through 8th grade, then graduated from the high school in New York Mills, Minnesota

She went to Normal School for one year to learn how to teach 1st through 8th grade in a one room country school.

Lil met her future husband, John, while playing whist at a friend’s house They were united in marriage on December 7, 1945. She was a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts, a Girl Scout Leader, a volunteer as a Community Resource Volunteer about nature topics in the schools, then a volunteer naturalist under Jim Gilbert at Carver Park, then Westwood Nature Center in St. Louis Park for 25 years.

Lil’s other interests include sewing, crocheting, playing whist, bowling, square dancing, stamp collecting, reading, doing the family history and making heritage books.

On June 4, 2019 Lil passed away in Robbinsdale, Minnesota at 94 years of age. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Preceded in death by her parents: William and Lillian Ahlers; husband: John Hopponen; sisters: Evelyn (Harry) Peterson; Florence Rose (Arlie) Niemala; brother: Willard Ahlers; son, Steven and a grandson.

She is survived by her daughter: Dr. A. Victoria; son: Terry; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; great-great-great nieces and nephews; four grandchildren; many other relatives and a host of friends.
