Breck Navy Pilot Missing in Pacific (should be Atlantic)

A Breckenridge man was the pilot of a U.S. Navy plane which went down Friday in the Pacific. He is Cmdr. John Milton Sweeney, 36, son of Mrs. Albert Sweeney of Breckenridge and brother of Mrs. Peggy Sweeney Robinson, 3933 Whittier St. in Abilene.
Cmdr. Sweeney, two other officers and seven enlisted men were aboard the plane which is reported missing.
The only official word received by Cmdr. Sweeney's relatives was a terse telegram from the Navy Department saying that Cmdr. Sweeney was listed as missing.
He is married and has four children. His wife, the former Marie Matthewson of Colorado, John Milton Jr., 7, William Arthur, 5, Albert Earl III (3?) and Dan, 1, are in Bermuda. Cmdr. Sweeney was transferred to Bermuda about three weeks ago.
The missing plane was on a routine training flight when it disappeared. A Liberian freighter reported seeing an unidentified plane crash into the Atlantic and burn about 8 p.m. (CST) Friday. The freighter tried to pick up what appeared to be a life raft but the ship lost sight of it because of turbulent weather conditions.
A Spanish freighter, the S.S. Astro, said it saw a white flare about 300 miles northwest of Bermuda. Navy planes and ships searching for the missing seaplane converged on the Spanish ship. Late Sunday night the Navy had not called off the search.
Cmdr. Sweeney is a 1938 graduate of Breckenridge and a 1942 [illegible]. He first served on the battleship Tennessee, then took flight training in the Navy Air Force and has been in that branch of service since.
