Cheryl Elaine Melton, 48, of the 1300 block of Pershing Court, died Saturday, June 20, 1998, in her residence.

Born in Washington, D.C., her family moved to Norfolk in 1953.

She retired from Southeastern Virginia Training Center as a registered nurse. She was an active member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, where she sang in the 8:30 Choir and was a member of the United Methodist Women, serving as vice chairwoman of the Administrative Board. She was also active in the Girl Scouts as a leader for many years.

Survivors include her parents, Marilyn and Bonney Flanagan of Norfolk; her twin brother, Jerry R. Melton of Jacksonville, Fla.; two uncles, Richard Davis of Silver Spring, Md., and Douglas Davis of Lewis, Del.; a great-aunt, Jessie Lee of Oshkosh, Wis.; a niece and two nephews, Christina Melton and Brian Melton, both of Ashburn, Va. and Justin Melton of Jacksonville, Fla.; and numerous cousins, relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Andrews United Methodist Church by the Rev. Danny Kesner. The family will be at 3479 Gamage Drive, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the St. Andrew's United Methodist Women's Library Fund, 717 Tucson Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23462. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements.
