--Sarah married Roy Monroe Nixon on her birthday, Feb. 22, 1947. The couple had 4 children. Daughter Miriam Kay "Murray" Nixon preceded her in death. Surviving children: Clifton, Susan, and Kathy. She had 7 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters.

--After Sarah married, she began a lifetime of devoted community service. She joined a home demonstration club which became Extension & Community Assn. of Gaston County. She served as the state President of the NC Extension Homemakers in 1987. She served on the national Extension Homemakers Council and internationally with the Associated Country Women of the World, headquartered in London. She was a voting delgate in triennial conferences in Kenya, Kansas City, The Hague in the Netherlands, and in Tasmania, Australia. She helped organize the ECA clubs in Mount Holly and Lowesville.
