Associate Professor Emerita, Family Medicine. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville in 1948, attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO and graduated from Goucher College in Baltimore in 1952. She received her M.S. degree from North Carolina State University in 1958 and her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1965. She joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1960, retiring in 1997. She was the Director of International Programs and a Faculty Fellow at the Carolina Population Center. She served on the Board of Directors for the Population Institute in Washington, D.C.
