Clara Lucas, 95, long-time resident of Fort Walton Beach, passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes on July 11, 2019.
Clara Elizabeth Baldwin was born in Claymont, Delaware on April 4, 1924. She was the only child of Louisa K. and John Edward Baldwin. She graduated from Claymont High School, and subsequently attended the University of Delaware in Newark, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. There she also met Army Air Corps 2nd LT George Ramsdell Lucas, an electrical engineering student from Wilmington, Delaware. The couple were married on July 10, 1945. They were married for 57 years, and had four children.
Clara moved to Fort Walton Beach with her husband upon his retirement from the U.S. Air Force in 1967. The couple lived the remainder of their lives in the Fort Walton area, where they were active members of Shalimar United Methodist Church for more than 30 years. Clara taught second grade for 20 years at Shalimar Elementary School, and was an active member of the Fort Walton Beach Garden Club. The family resided at 344 Chelsea Drive, and 33 Cherie Court until George's death of cancer at the age of 77 in February 2000. Thereafter, Clara resided for various periods in Westwood Senior residence, at 6 Shalimar Drive in Shalimar, at Brookdale Senior Residences in Seminole and San Destin, Florida. Her permanent residence during this period was her beloved lakefront home on Eastern Lake in Seagrove Florida, which she and her husband constructed themselves during the 1970s. Her final residence was Apt 167 at Somerby's Senior Care Facility in Santa Rosa Beach, Walton county, not far from her beach home.
Clara was preceded in death by her husband and her younger son, James Baldwin Lucas. She is survived by two daughters, Sara Louise Patterson (Blacksburg, VA) and Nancy Beth Murie (Fort Walton Beach), and by her elder son, George R. Lucas, Jr (Annapolis, MD), together with 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She will be interred with her late husband following funeral services at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date to be announced.
