Roger Alan Cole, age 85, of Wyoming, died July 16, 2019.

Rog was born on August 11, 1933, to Frank and Josephine Cole. He grew up in Standale where his father distributed Sinclair fuel oil. Rog graduated from Union High School and Michigan State University with a degree in chemistry. Two weeks after surviving the destruction of his parents’ home in the Standale 1956 tornado, he received his draft notice to the U.S. Army and he served until 1958. Upon his return, he began working at Dewey Products where he met the love of his life, Ruth VanderMey, marrying her in 1960.

Rog continued working as a paint chemist at Inmont and Guardsman, retiring from Avery Dennison in 1998. He served for many years as an elder and clerk for Grandville Avenue and Roosevelt Park CRCs. They are currently members of Calvary CRC where the funeral will be held. Rog and Ruth enjoyed tent camping throughout the U.S. and in their retirement they also enjoyed several trips to Europe. Rog loved to read, particularly history. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed many years of CALL classes. He also was a great storyteller and loved talking to people. Rog and Ruth took great delight in attending all their grandchildren’s events. They loved going to the Grand Rapids Symphony and the opera.

Rog is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth; children: Catherine and Michael Bosscher, David Cole and Luisa Rebull, and Dennis and Stasia Cole; grandchildren: Rose and Eric Thayer, Allen Bosscher, Luke Bosscher, Mark and Laura Bosscher, Andrew Cole, Emily Cole, Lauren Cole, Grace Cole, Brianna and Michael Vorhees, and Carlos Salas; great-grandchildren: Dean Thayer, Emma Waite, and Luca Vorhees; in-laws, Carol and Marvin VanTimmeren, and Helen and Marvin Polderman; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Ronald and Beverly Cole, and Barbara Cole.

He courageously fought lung cancer for over 9 years. Rog’s family would like to thank Dr. Bilisko and Dr. Brinker for their many years of care, along with the staff of Faith Hospice, particularly nurse Kathy who enabled him to live life fully right up to the end.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Christian Reformed Church, 3500 Byron Center Ave. SW, Wyoming, with Rev. Mark VanDrunen officiating. Interment will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Christian Education at Calvary CRC or the Calvin Academy for Lifelong Learning (CALL).
