Noah J. Hurst has joined CMSA as a Principal Research Engineer for research in the automated analysis of very large, disparate data sets. He has worked as an engineer in the development of missiles and rockets for the Army, starting with the Army Ballistic Missile Agency, developed the original equations for the simultaneous ablation and conduction procedure in 1958 and programmed them on a tube computer. They were part of the early experiments in the moon program. In 1967, as a GS 15, he was appointed the Director of the National Blast Program by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to pull together the diverse efforts to address the problems of nuclear blasts and their effects on offensive and defensive weapons systems. This was a multi-agency position of the Army, Air Force and civilian agencies.
Dr. Hurst has led several teams of engineers in theoretical and practical exercises in fielding Defensive Army systems like the SPRINT and SPARTAN which were deployed for a short time in the mid 1970's. He also led a team of government employees and contractors in the determination of the Survivability of the national Triad of the Army, Air Force and Navy missiles and submarines. This required the direct interface with senior groups of the three Services. Dr. Hurst held several positions as Branch Chiefs and Chief of the Systems Engineering Division, Ballistic Missile Defense Systems Command. He has served as a member of Boards of Directors for two local engineering companies. From October, 2001 to Dec 2006, he formed and led a team for a contractor to formulate a strategy for the prevention of terrorism on the US. From this work, he has devoted himself to the solution of this major problem by examining the ways to automatically analyze very large, disparate data sets from many formats, languages, and media and disseminate knowledge to various users and decision makers.
Dr. Hurst earned the BME degree in engineering from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), earned the MSME degree in engineering from the University of Alabama and the DPA in management from Nova Southeastern University.
