Served as a Private in the Revolutionary War with the 1st and 3rd Regiments New Jersey Militia and the with the Minutemen of Pittsgrove Twp, Salem, New Jersey.

Son of Abdon Abbott. Abdon was accused of supporting the British Army on 26 Sep 1778 in Salem, New Jersey. Some say Joseph's mother was Elizabeth Blue/Blew, but Abdon and Elizabeth were married on 16 Oct 1745.

He married Esther Osborn in 1766. Said children of this marriage were Chloe (m. Asahel “Asa” Lake), Mary (m. David Hays), John (m. Hannah Reynolds), Rebecca (m. William Badgley), Rachel (m. Matthias Badgley), Eunice, Jane (1787-1844/m. Joseph Reynolds), Joseph Jr. (m. Rhoda Masterson) and Silas (m. Violetta Brown the daughter of Greer Brown) .

Moved from New Jersey to Virginia and shortly after the war came to Franklin Township, Brown, Ohio. With Greer Brown they located 1000 acres and each taking 500 acres.
