Phillip Thornwell Henry, 62, died Tuesday, June 26, 2007.

He was born in Roanoke County, on Aug. 12, 1944, to Rufus Albert and Lillian Porter Henry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis L. Henry.

He attended Cave Spring High School and was a graduate of Virginia Tech with a degree in civil engineering. He worked for the Corps of Engineers in West Virginia, as city engineer and superintendent of water resources in Martinsville for 11 years; was city engineer at Boulder City, Nev., in 1984; and in 1995, was appointed director of public works in Boulder.

In 2005, he retired and returned to Virginia. He was an active member of Poages Mill Church of the Brethren in Roanoke.

Surviving are his wife, Gretchen Ehni Henry of Roanoke; two sons, Matthew Phillip Henry and Andrew Ehni Henry, both of Roanoke; three brothers, Ronald Albert Henry, Ira Stephen Henry and Sherman Lee Henry; a sister, Sue Henry Giles; an aunt in Martinsville; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Poages Mill Church of the Brethren with Pastor E.B. Shoemaker officiating. A graveside service will be in the family cemetery on Corntassel Lane.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke
