Kathryn Ann Black, 65, of Back Street, Midland, passed into eternal life Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at her residence surrounded by family.
Born on Aug. 31, 1953, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late John Patrick McMahon Sr. and Dorothy Elizabeth (Meyers) McMahon.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Theodore Frederick "Rick" Black Jr., on Sept. 10, 2017; and two brothers, Phil and Tom McMahon.
Kathy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the parish Sodality.
A graduate of Bishop Walsh, class of 1971, she continued her education at Frostburg State University where she earned her bachelor's in elementary education and her master's in reading and literacy.
Her career began at St. Peter's Catholic School, in Westernport, where she taught first and second grade for over 20 years. She continued her teaching career at St. Michael's Catholic School as principal and concluded her career working in special education in Allegany County Schools and as student teaching advisor for Frostburg State University. During her 44 years as an educator, Kathy touched many lives of countless students and their families.
She was an avid gardener with a love for flowers. She enjoyed traveling, especially the many cruises with her car club friends. She and Rick enjoyed classic cars and were members of the Queen City Region Antique Car Club and the Western Maryland Street Rod Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Monica Denise Black of Midland; siblings, Pat McMahon and wife, Sue Ann, Mary Layman and husband, Darrell, Joe McMahon and wife, Jan, Paul McMahon, Teresa Martin, Cecilia Hite and husband, Bobby, Jim "Fugie" McMahon, Tim McMahon and wife, Marcia, Sue Pyles and husband, Greg, Gail Weidman and husband, David and Rose Cullen and husband, Jamie; brother-in-law, Allan Gates and wife, Betty; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Kathy was a friend to all she met and always had a smile; she will be missed by many.
A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Midland, with Fr. Ed Hendricks as celebrant. Family and friends will be received one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m.
Inurnment will be held at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, at a later date.
