An English rugby international. In 1881 and 1882 he played a total of 5 Tests, and had the dual distinctions of scoring 3 tries in his debut match and captaining England twice. He was the Treasurer of the English Rugby Union 1884-94, the author of "Rugby Football" and the headmaster of Repton College. His nephew, Jumbo Vassall, also played for England.
