Elaine Glunder Lomber

PLYMOUTH, Mass. – Elaine passed away peacefully on July 9, 2019, with her daughter Diana and son-in-law Russell by her side. She was 87.

She is survived by her sister, Jeannette Faure; niece, Cathy Faure; two daughters, Clareann Lomber and Diana (Russell) Pierce; grandson, Michael Sheehan and his mother Nancy (Chuck) Case; and many lifelong friends.

She was predeceased by her parents Clare Wallace and Eberhard Glunder; son, Michael Edward Lomber; and husband, Edward Harvey Lomber.

Elaine was born on April 7, 1932, in Queens, N.Y., grew up in Schenectady, N.Y., and spent most of her adult life in Canandaigua. She met her future husband Edward Lomber while waitressing at Burke's restaurant on Main Street in Canandaigua in the early 1950s. They were married on September 11, 1954.

Ed and Elaine both attended Syracuse University. Elaine was earning her bachelor's degree in dramatic arts, while Ed finished law school. They settled in Canandaigua to raise their three children.

Elaine began teaching English at the local high school in the 1970s. Soon after, she earned her master's degree from SUNY Geneseo. She then joined the faculty at the Community College of the Finger Lakes in 1974, where she stayed until her retirement in 1995. She was a literature, speech and English professor, director of the honors program and chair of the humanities department. She was voted VIP by the students as someone who made a difference in their lives.

Elaine's passion for acting never waned. She was involved with local theaters in Schenectady and Canandaigua. Her favorite was working with the regional theater at the Bristol Valley Playhouse in Naples from 1962 to 1985. She was a lead actress in many of their plays including "Blithe Spirit," "Butterflies are Free" and "The Spiral Staircase."

She also did voiceover work for radio commercials, reviewed movies for the Daily Messenger and edited publications for the historical society.

She had a love for literature, fiction, non-fiction and of course, as those who knew her, Alice in Wonderland. She loved words and always had the Oxford English Dictionary by her side.

She was an active member at the Wood Library. Elaine was imaginative and during an annual meeting she created and hosted a puzzle in the form of an interactive "Shakespeare Murder Mystery."

Elaine participated in book clubs, the Wranglers, travelers clubs and an informal luncheon group with many good friends.

Her wit and dry sense of humor stayed with her until the very end. She will be sorely missed.

A celebration of Elaine's life will be held at The Granger Homestead on Sunday, July 28, from 2 to 5 p.m.
