Elmer Richard Cochran Jr., 84, was born to Elmer and Lillian Cochran on November 10, 1934 in a cotton patch in Buda, Texas. He left this life at home in Stratford, Oklahoma on July 13, 2019 after a short battle with leukemia.

Richard was born the only son in a family with five sisters. His father died at the age of 35, making “Jr” the man of the house at an early age. He worked hard all his life starting at the tender age of seven washing dishes. He had a variety of jobs before he was drafted by the Army when he was 19. So, he enlisted in the Navy.

While he was stationed in Norman, Oklahoma he met his first love, Loretta. Their son, Richard Dean, was born while Richard was overseas, serving on a minesweeper in Borneo at the tail end of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged and the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. He began working at a local bowling trophy shop and after the owner left abruptly owing Richard money, the shop gave him an embroidery machine as payment. He and his wife began embroidering bowling shirts for local teams, a vocation and a hobby that lasted many years and involved the entire family.

He was hired by the U.S. Postal Service in Las Vegas and a few years after his daughter, Karen, was born he transferred to the post office in Norman, Oklahoma. There he worked as a postal carrier until he retired in July 1990. Richard delivered cars for local car dealerships until the debilitating health of his wife prevented it. She passed away in 2007, just short of their 50th wedding anniversary.

A year after his wife had passed, Richard met his second love, Alex Smith. After dating for a respectable amount of time, he moved in with her at her home in Stratford, Oklahoma. They lived and loved together for 11 years, until his passing on July 13. Richard always said that he was a lucky man to have found two women who would put up with him.

Richard enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, playing fastpitch softball and working on various projects around the house. He was a hard worker all his life and always had his eye on his next project.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Frances Cooper and Joyce Achey and his wife, Loretta. He is survived by his girlfriend, Alexsandra Smith of the home, his son, Richard Cochran of Nashville, Tennessee, his daughter, Karen Cochran of Noble, Oklahoma, his sisters, Mae Smith, Barbara Strickland and Gloria Mason, all of Texas as well as many family and friends who will miss him.

Services will be held at McMahan’s Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 20. Burial with Military Naval Honors will be at Fairview Maguire Cemetery following the service.
