Funeral services honoring her life will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 22, 2019 at Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Dennis Strawn officiating. Burial will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 a.m. until time of service on Monday, July 22, 2019. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Betty was born on December 28, 1929, in Mattoon, the daughter of Jesse M. and Violet (Cowger) Gross. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Jesse Gross Jr. and Steve Gross; and sister-in-law, Wanda Gross.
Survivors include her four children, Marty (Jan) McFarland of Oakwood, Douglas (Debbie) Stivers of Mattoon, Bonnie (Terry) Higginbotham of Paris, and Keith (Kay) Stivers of Mattoon; eight grandchildren, Christina Price of Charleston, Ryan (Amy) McFarland of Oakwood, Patricia (Josh) St. Clair of Charleston, Brian (Megan) Metzke of Sherman, Il, Jason Stivers of Charleston, Kimberly Stivers of Charleston, Ashley Stivers and Jasmine Stivers of San Diego, California; four step grandchildren, Travis Higginbotham, April Creech, Shane Higginbotham, all of Paris, Josh Farmer of Mattoon; several great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Betty Gross of Mattoon; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Betty was employed as a cashier in Mattoon for over fifty-two years and was County Market’s oldest serving employee retiring on her 89th birthday. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mattoon. Betty and her close friend, Donna Lanman, enjoyed spending time together, going on outings and meeting up to visit at the local mall.
