Samuel Leon Hughes was born February 18th, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland to Melvin Leon Hughes and Naomi Bertha Hughes. He grew up the eldest of four siblings, Melvin, Eddie and Hope.

Brother Sam, as he was known to everyone, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in February of 1958. He served two Tours in Vietnam was active until February 1980 when he retired as an E-8 or 1st Sergeant.

While he was stationed in Hawaii, he met his first wife, Edwina Mai Leilani Chai whom he married in 1968. On January 10th, 1975 they gave birth to their daughter, Samantha Hughes.

After retiring from the Marines, Brother Sam settled down in Oceanside California and was a Power Plant, Turbine Technician from 1980 until he retired in 2005. It was in Oceanside where he married Claretha Sharper in 1994 and the two were happily married until October 2016 when Claretha transitioned to be with the Lord.

It was during their marriage that Sam, became Brother Sam! He saw Claretha get saved and observed her transformation in Christ! As a result, Sam was compelled to give his life to the Lord and accept Him as his Savior. Brother Sam was born and became immersed in service to the Lord and the Kingdom and eventually grew to become a recognized Elder of the Church.

After Claretha's passing, Brother Sam experienced a resurgence from the Lord as God brought Sister Lena into his life. Sister Lena was God's gift to Brother Sam, and their romance blossomed into an incredible love story orchestrated by the Lord's Love for them both. Their marriage has been an inspiration to others, and is a testimony of God's Favor over those, who are surrendered to Him!

Brother Sam loved cooking and manicuring his lawn. He enjoyed all sports and particularly loved to watch golf. He enjoyed traveling, especially going on Ocean Cruises with family and friends. He was passionate about his Friday morning Men's group, the ROMEOs, Really Old Men Eating Out!
