Elbert Ray Brown was born 1924 in Linn Creek, Missouri, to parents Asa Ray Brown and Medora Alma (Winrod) Brown. He was the oldest of five children and known by his nickname of "Brownie."
In 1943, before his enlistment in the US Army at age 17, he married Eunice Bell Kandall. They had one son.
Elbert died of a heart attack at his home in Lebanon, Missouri, in 1975.
