Hugh McGuire was born about 1800 in Monaghan, Ireland according to his immigration record, and died May 6, 1886 in Wabasha, Minnesota. He married Ann Magill in 1834 in Marion, New York according to family notes. Immigration papers show that Hugh came to Lyme, New York on March 20, 1834. He was naturalized on Sept. 9, 1840 in Lyme, New York. Hugh and Ann are shown on the 1850 Federal census for owning a farm near Cape Vincent, New York and he also worked in the ship building industry there.

The family moved to Galena, Illinois in 1854 to work in the lead mines. They later moved to Wabasha, Minnesota to work on building steamboats. He stayed active on the river as long as he could. He also played the fiddle according to family lore.

Hugh and Ann were the parents of six children all born in Cape Vincent: Redmond who died in the Civil War, Edward, Hugh, John, James, and Ellen. John McGuire ended up marrying a sister of Jane Sweeney's, so there were two McGuire brothers who married two Sweeney sisters. They met up in Galena, Illinois.

Hugh is buried in the St. Felix Cemetery in Wabasha in an unmarked grave.
