Ogden Standard Examiner Dec 12, 1882
On Saturday, Mr. Joseph Skeens, of Plain City was in Ogden most of the day, doing business and seeing friends. In the evening he returned home in company with his son and several other parties in a wagon. On reaching Slaterville en route for home it became very dark, and while crossing a ditch or large rut, the vehicle gace a sudden lurch and Mr. Skeens was thrown violently to the ground. The team was stopped immediatly and went to his assistance. When discovered he had been deprived of the use of his limbs. His spinal column was severely injured and he was completely paralyzed. Mr. Skeens was taken to his home, and a messenger dispatched for Dr. John Driver. The doctor found his patient suffering severely from the effects of the shock. He did all that he could be done for him, but at the last accounts he lay in a very critical condition, being unable to move his head or to lift a hand.
