Donna Scherer

Longtime Delta resident Donna Sue Scherer died June 7, 2019, at Colorow Care Center in Olathe. She was 86.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 20, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta.
Inurnment will follow in Mesa View Cemetery in Delta.

She was born on June 30, 1932, to David and Nora (Singleton) Vanderhoofven in Liberal, Kan., but spent the first few years in Goodwell, Okla. The family moved from Oklahoma to Delta in 1937. She graduated from Delta High School in 1951.

She married Leo Watts in 1954. They lived in Texas and Louisiana before moving back to Delta in 1956. They had one daughter; the marriage ended in divorce in 1970.

In 1978, she married Byron Scherer in Delta where they lived until her husband's death in 1995.

Mrs. Scherer worked at Smith's Dry Cleaners for several years then went to work for Russell Stover Candy in Montrose until her retirement in 1994.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting, sewing, crafts, baking, growing roses, her church and watching baseball.

Mrs. Scherer is survived by daughter, Karen (John) Saltysiak of Delta; brother, David (Marilynn) Vanderhoofven of Delta; sister, Boots Buchanan of Jacksonville, N.C.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Vanderhoofven of Grand Junction; granddaughters, Taina Saltysiak of Denver, Brittney and Francesca Saltysiak; and great-grandson, Tatum Cool of Delta.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron Scherer; son, Kevin Watts; brother, Merritt Vanderhoofven; and sister, Tina Lue Vanderhoofven.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
