Mr. Douglass was a son of missionaries, Emma (Philips) and Rev. J. Larimer Douglass. He and his mother returned to the United States when she grew ill, arriving in Boston in 1858. His father followed, and they settled in Philadelphia, where he became the pastor of Blockley Baptist Church. After his mother's death, James lived with his grandparents, Joseph and Mary Philips in Snowden Township, Allegheny County.
