John Byler Mallard was born in Tennessee in 1820. He married Susan Scott in Mississippi in 1844. After finishing the University of Tennessee law school, Mallard moved to Texas in 1845 and build one of the first homes in Palestine. He formed a partnership with William Alexander and John H. Reagan and served as Anderson County's first chief justice. Mallard was a member of the Fifth Texas Legislature. Mallard died in Palestine on June 20, 1854.
