Elizabeth Snaman Weber Jay was born in 9 April 1877 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of Mary Matilda Snaman Weber and George Weber.
Elizabeth was the eldest of five children. Her younger sister, Lillian, and infant brother, George Herbert died before the turn of the century. Elizabeth grew up with two younger sisters, Florence Lois Weber Smalley, who is better known as Lois Weber, the famous movie producer, and her youngest sibling, Mary “Ethel” Weber Howland.
Elizabeth became ill with scarlet fever as a young girl. She lost all her hair, but fortunately recovered. As a young woman before marriage, she was a teacher.
In 1902, at the age 23, she married William Harrison “Harry” Jay in Allegheny, PA. They celebrated the birth of four children in Pennsylvania, 1903, a daughter, Marion Lois Jay Pettijohn; in 1905, a son, William “Bill” Smalley Jay; Irvin Foster Jay in 1908; and John Harrison “Jack” Jay in 1912.
In 1914, they moved to Florida. She was expecting their fifth child at time of travel. Her husband purchased their first automobile, and 13 hours later, with her husband and four small children and all their belongings they traveled to a small farm in Boynton Beach, Florida. There were few roads, and many were paved in oyster shells. In March of 1914, her youngest daughter, Dorothy Elizabeth Jay was born on the farm, delivered by Elizabeth’s mother, Tilley Weber.
By 1920 they had moved to Miami. They belonged to the Central Christian Church of Miami. She was a part of the Women’s League and the Missionary Society in association with the church. She led bible study and participated in many functions.
She was an industrious and frugal woman in her sewing, cooking and canning. She did beautiful works of Huck Embroidery. She was careful not to over indulge on sweets or alcohol.
Elizabeth and her husband purchased a small home in Hendersonville to spend their summers after retirement. The home became central to the family for many vacations and time together. She canned and her husband raised a garden. They attended the First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville. They would spend half the year in Hendersonville, and half the year in Miami.
On 26 February 1966, Elizabeth passed away. She had been married 64 years and was 88 years old. She was very very loved by her family.-Beverly Hickman Atkins (Great Granddaughter)
