He graduated in May 1910, along with Alpha Huddleston. They were married a week after graduation. He taught school until he decided he wanted to become a minister. He entered Baylor University in Waco in 1914, and graduated with a BA degree in 1918. He then got his MA degree in 1920. After being minister of a church in Las Vegas, New Mexico, he attended the University of Chicago, working on his PhD degree. He had to leave school after one year, and returned to Texas, where he taught High School in Fort Worth, until 1936, when he taught he was acting president of the Baptist Seminary in Kansas City, Kansas. He left there in 1938 to become pastor of the Baptist Church in Wellington, Kansas.
During this period of time, he received his Doctor's degree from the Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth in 1941.
He returned to Baylor University as Professor of Religion in 1945, where he retired in 1962. Because of his wife's illness he and his wife moved to Los Angeles to live with his daughter, Gladys Louise Burt.
He died in Torrance, California in 1978, at the age of 92. He and his wife are buried in the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California (a suburb of Los Angeles).
He was survived by two children, Gladys Louise and Maurice. His wife had previously died in Los Angeles in 1968. He also is survived by three grandchildren.
