Mr. John Gannaway, U. S. Navy Retired, of the Grant Community died at his Grant Highway home Thursday afternoon September 5, 2013 following a two year battle with cancer.

Services were conducted from the Carthage Chapel of Anderson Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon September 8th with Bro. Floyd Massey and Mr. Gannaway's pastor Bro. Doug Dillard officiating.

Born John Davis Gannaway Jr. on August 2, 1935 in Anniston, Alabama, he was one of two sons of the late John Davis Gannaway Sr. and Catherine Crowley Gannaway.

His only brother, Michael Morgan Gannaway, preceded him in death.

On September 3,1955 in Iuka, Mississippi he was united in marriage to Sullivans Bend Community native the former Joanne Lynch who survives.

Mr. Gannaway was a graduate of the Columbia Central High School.

He was retired from the United States Navy with 20 years, 5 months, and 26 days of total service which included over 6 years of foreign/sea service. He was an Aviation Power Plant Mechanic and retired with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. During his career, Mr. Gannaway received five Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal.

Following his Naval career, he worked at Ryder Truck and Nimnicht Chevrolet. Mr. Gannaway was a member of the Lighthouse Church at Grant.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 58 years are three daughters, Gayle Gannaway & spouse Kathy of Dahlonega, Georgia, Margaret Gannaway of Jacksonville, Florida, Patricia Pulmano of Pensacola, Florida; a granddaughter, Jenafer East & husband Josh of Pensacola, Florida.
