Biographical Notes:
Malissa was born to John W and Nancy J (Parker) Seibert who lived in Alabama at the time of her birth. Her father was from the Carolinas and her mother from Tennessee. Malissa had known siblings: Elizabeth M, a year older, and William J, 3 years younger. (Note: the family last name is also reported with spelling of Sybert.)

Malissa and her husband had 6 known children (she reported 7 children born and 5 living in the 1910 census):
Lee V Allen born 1878 (married Mary Ann Justice; Lavina Collins)
Mark T Allen born July 1869
John Francis born 1873 (married Lillian Zula Tremain in 1898*; married Leta Belle Milnes in 1924)
Grace Emma born 1877 (married Phillip Harlan; Isaac B Vincent)
Pearl Mattie born 1883 (several marriages--the first was to William F Halterman; also married Fred Eugene Hitchcock)
Joseph born ~1887 (married Ida S Barnett)

It is not known when Malissa married, but it was after Martin had finished his service in 1865. By 1870, they lived in Swan, Taney County, Missouri, where Martin farmed and Malissa had given birth to 2 sons: Lee and Mark, Lee having been born in February of 1868 and Mark in July of 1869.

By 1880, they had moved on to Harrison in Boone County, Arkansas. Four children were recorded in this census: Lee, Mark T, John F (born in 1873), and a daughter Emma J, born February 1877 (according to a later census).

Martin was still farming. Malissa's mother Nancy lived next door, and, interesting--Malissa was reported as having measles. Both of the older boys worked on the farm. Times were hard. Later, another daughter, Pearl Mattie, was born to them in 1883 while in Arkansas, and a son was born to the couple: Joseph, born in February of 1887.

In November of 1882, Martin applied for a pension as an invalid from his service for the Union in the Civil War.

After 1887, Martin and Melissa moved to Cherokee County, Kansas. There they established their home in Empire City, but as noted, times were hard and Martin was not successful in his endeavors. He ended his life in 1893, and Malissa applied for a widow’s pension on August 5, 1893.

Some of her children soon married: Grace Emma to Phillip Harlan in Arkansas on 7 April 1895, Lee to Mary Ann Justice in Arkansas on 21 April 1895, John Francis to Zula Tremain on 23 April 1898 in Kansas, and Mattie Pearl to William F Halterman on October 4, 1899, in Carthage, MO.

Malissa stayed in Empire for many years before moving to Joplin. In 1900, Malissa lived in Empire with son Lee, his wife Mary Ann, and her new grandchild, Willie, and Malissa’s son Joseph had joined the family. In 1910, she lived in the household with daughter Emma Harland, her son in law Phillip Harland, their daughter Eva, and Malissa’s son Joseph in Galena, Kansas—the fifth ward, which was Empire.

Malissa’s son Joseph married on Christmas Eve, 1912, but then lost his life in a mining accident near Miami in 1914.

Malissa finally moved to Joplin, MO, where she could be close to her son Lee. She lost her life in 1921, with Lee informing her death certificate. She rests peacefully after her labors, in Oak Hill Cemetery, where others of her family rest as well.

*John Francis Allen and his wife Lillian Zula Tremain had several children together: a daughter Pearl Ethel born 05 Feb 1899 in Galena; a son Roy born 24 Jun 1901 in Empire City; another son Fred born 04 Apr 1903 In Empire City. As of this narrative in 2019, John's cemetery stone has an incorrect birth year of 1883--it should read 1873.
