Sidney (Sid) Johnson, age 92, died in his home Friday, July 12, 2019.
Sid was born April 29, 1927 in Alabama to the late Lucius Johnson and Lula Wood Johnson. In addition to his parents and sisters, Sybil and Laverne, he was preceded in death by his wife Wannette Price Johnson.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan Arp of Woodstock, granddaughter Ashley and grandsons Aaron and Kyle Arp all of Woodstock.
Sid attended Lanier Boys School and Mercer University. He was a United States Marine veteran and was classified as a sharpshooter. He was under contract for several years with the Chicago Cubs in their minor league team. He suffered a full hearing loss in his left ear as a small child. The loss contributed to a balance issue so he decided to leave baseball. He had completed all requirements to obtain his pilot’s license except for the solo. He was unable to complete the solo due to this hearing loss. Not letting these things deter him, he continued on to a life of self-employment in the auto industry. He started Sid Johnson Motor Co. in the early 70’s. He held numerous golf awards and he has his own race car in the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame in Dahlonega. Sid loved spending time outdoors bird watching, and fishing with his friends Jerry Moye and Phil Boatright. He had a love for sports and liked to watch football especially the Georgia Bulldogs. He loved watching baseball every day and was an Atlanta Braves fan. He also watched a lot of golf. Sid was loved by so many people, especially his family.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 17, 2019 in the Richard N. Stanley Memorial Chapel. Rev. Roger Holley will officiate. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. prior to the funeral hour.
Pallbearers will be Kyle Arp, Aaron Arp, Marc Tanton, Al Rowland, Jason Rowland and Clay Hall. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Moye, Dennis Moore, Willis Wombles, Phillip Boatright and Lee Williamson.
Stanley Funeral Home and Crematory/Wrightsville Chapel has charge of arrangements.
