Naturalist, mathematician and scholar Louis LeConte, for whom the LeConte pear was named, resided in Liberty County. His plantation, known as Woodsmasten, is now the site of the LeConte Botanical Gardens. The LeConte name has been memorialized in several other ways. The LeConte wood turtle, LeConte sparrow, LeConte thrasher, and other species bear the name. Several landmarks are associated with their name: Mt. LeConte, in the Smoky Mountains, a glacier and a ferryboat in Alaska, and various other things bear the name and reflect the esteem in which he is held.

Son of John Eatton LeConte and Jane Sloan. He was born in the Independent Colony of Shrewsbury in New Jersey. He married Ann Quarterman on January 30, 1812 in Liberty County, GA. Louis was also regarded as an expert on the natural history of the southeastern United States.
