Greenville (Texas) Evening Banner, Thu, 21 Jan 1915, page 3, VETERAN CHOKED TO DEATH ON DRIED APPLES

Wednesday shortly after the noon hour a Confederate veteran, W.M. Simmons, died at his home north of the city about awo (sic) miles, from the effects of choking on dried apples.

Thursday late he ate some dried apples and in some way became choked. His wife was away from the home when this occurred and he did not tell her until next day when a physician was called in and efforts were made to relieve him, but it was of no avail.

The burial was to take place today at the Concord cemetery at Jacobia.

Deceased was born in Tennessee and lived there until a few years ago when he moved to this county and located north of the city. He was seventy-eight years of age and a man well liked and esteemed by those who knew him.

He was a Confederate veteran and was with the brigade of one of the Hill’s during the civil war. He was also a Mason in good standing at his death.
