Bob Childress, 86, died November 16, 2010, after a short illness while with his dear friend, Abby Clay, in Kingwood, Texas, with whom he had shared a happy life for the past 5 years. He lived most of his life at the Forks of Coal, Alum Creek, on the Childress farm of his grandfather, W. L. Childress. He served in the army during World War II in the Pacific Theater from New Caledonia to Japan. He was a much decorated soldier twice being the recipient of the Purple Heart medal. He also served his country during the Korean conflict with the field artillery unit. Bob always tried to do the right thing. His word was his bond. He is survived by son, Steve Childress and wife Sandra, of Alum Creek; grandsons, Dr. Steve Childress II and wife Susan, of Daniels, W.Va., and Otis Mann and wife Amy of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Janice Connor and husband Lowell, of Chesterfield, Va.; nephews, Greg Whitlock and wife Nan- cy, of Newport, Va., and Darren Whitlock and wife Dana, of East Palestine, Ohio. Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Peggy Childress; son, Bently Childress; parents, Maynard and Hilda Childress; brother, Richard and sister, Betty Jane Childress. There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. on December 5, 2010, at One Bently Circle, Alum Creek. -- [From: Greg Whitlock:]
