Donald Dale Watkins, 80, died July 19, 2005, at his home. He was born in Nokomis Mountain, Ill., and lived in Vero Beach 14 years, coming from Boca Raton.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He was a member of the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church in Vero Beach. He had been a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cubs in the late 1940s and early '50s. He later had his own mortgage broker company in Boca Raton.

Survivors include his son, Dr. Samuel Watkins of Vero Beach; daughter, Cindy Verrier of Tallahassee; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Watkins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3375 20th St., Suite 100, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

SERVICES: A graveside service will be 9 a.m. July 23 at Crestlawn Cemetery in Vero Beach, with the Rev. Chris Taylor officiating.
