Gene Hill, 84, of Marietta, Georgia, died July 22, 2020, following a brief illness.

He was born in Centralia, Illinois on November 5, 1935, to Joseph Robert and Verna Jean Hill. After graduating from Centralia High School in 1953, he joined the Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant, serving in Germany. For his service, he received the Army Occupation Medal (Germany) and the National Defense Service Medal. Upon completion of his military service, he attended Georgia Tech, graduating with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Mr. Hill worked for many years at Lockheed Marietta, as a Systems Engineer.

Out of a longtime interest in owning and riding horses, Gene began shoeing his own and, in 1976, retired from Lockheed to work full time to working as a professional farrier. Over the next twenty years he devoted himself to perfecting his craft, shoeing horses, giving shoeing clinics and competing in forging contests throughout the United States and Canada. He opened a farrier supply business, G & H Horseshoe Sales, working out of his basement, in 1974, eventually moving to a storefront on Canton Road, later building a larger store next door. G & H served the professional farrier community throughout the Southeast for forty-five years until it was sold in 2019. After retirement, Gene divided his time between his home in Marietta and the land he owned near Rockmart. He loved nothing more than riding his tractor on his farm, being out in the fresh air of the countryside, tending his garden and feeling himself a part of the land.

Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his wife Ninetta, brothers John and Roger, and sisters Dorothy and Ruth Ann. He is survived by his son Paul, daughter Susan Harris, her husband Troy their daughter Madelyn, twin brother Joe, and younger brother Gary.
A private graveside service will be held in Marietta.
