Martin was born in Norway in 1852. His family immigrated to the United States in the mid 1850's and settled in Chicago. In 1872 he arrived in the Red River Valley and worked as a lathing contractor on buildings for the Northern Pacific Railroad. Through hard work and savvy investments , in 1897 with two other businessmen, he founded Fargo National Bank. He was active in the community and served as President of the city council.

He donated the land to the city for the Fargo Airport and in return they agreed to name the airport after the Hector's.

daughter Evelyn Marie born July 28, 1889 in Fargo, North Dakota married William Harland McGill Apr 19, 1913 in Fargo.
