Ella Mae (Shirel) Thompson, 98, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at Pine Haven Health and Rehab. Ella Mae was born in Smith Mills, Kentucky on May 23, 1921 to the late Louis D. and Nell (Watson) Shirel.
She was a Rosie Riveter at Republic Aviation during World War II. Ella Mae owned her own custom drapery shop in the basement of her home and was an avid seamstress. She was a long time member of Keck Avenue Baptist Church. Ella Mae loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her 3 generations of grandchildren.
Ella Mae is survived by her daughters, Jane Reburn (Scott) of Evansville, IN and June Ierardi of Evansville, IN; brother, Henry Dix Shirel of Sturgis, KY; grandchildren, Tracy Royalty, Sherri Wright (Andrej), Angel Putnam (Robert), and Brandy Ierardi; great-grandchildren, Lacie Ierardi, Johnathan Ierardi, Joshua Ierardi, Sydney Wright, and Noah Wright; great-great-grandchildren, Ayden Ierardi-Short, Conner Ierardi, and Jameson Ierardi-Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ella Mae was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years in 1973, William I. Thompson; her parents; sisters, Maggie Bumpus, Levina Shirel Lovell, June Wolfe, and Nellie Rowley; brothers, James "Jiggs" Shirel, Smiley Shirel, BJ Shirel, and Pete Shirel; and a grandson, Brandon Reburn.
Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, July 15, 2019 at Whitsell Funeral Home, 609 N Main St., Sturgis, KY 42459 with Pastor Marshall Locke officiating. Burial will follow at Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis, Kentucky. Friends may visit from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM on Sunday, July 14, 2019 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 E Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN and again from 11:00 AM until service time on Monday at Whitsell Funeral Home.
