“I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course. I have kept the faith, henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” II Timothy 4:7-8

Sherri A. Clark, 63, of N. Dinwiddie, VA, departed this life on Monday, January 14, 2019 at her residence.

Sherri Ann Clark was the first child born to James and Lula Blackwell Clark of Petersburg, Virginia, on December 28, 1956. Her early educational development took place through Petersburg Public Schools, as she became a 1974 graduate. She continued her educational at Virginia State University, where she set the foundation to complete a lifelong goal of becoming an elementary school teacher. She graduated with honors in 1979. Sherri pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha in 1977. Fulfillment of a childhood dream of becoming an elementary school teacher began at Sunnyside. After nine years, she completed her career at the Dinwiddle Middle School. In her 2ndyear of teaching she was assigned to give a play that would help students to handle challenges with courage and responsibility. She wrote an original musical on “Human Relations”. It was well received at Sunnyside Elementary. Her principal, the late Melvin B. Alsbrooks, asked if she would tour four schools in the county to share it with others, Midway Elementary, Dinwiddle Elementary, McKenney Elementary, and Rohoic Elementary.

Sherri has earned many spiritual, civic, social and educational recognitions during her endeavors. From the age of eight years old, she has worked diligently in the Metropolitan Baptist Church. She began teaching Sunday School class for Kindergartners at the age of 13 years old. For nearly four decades, she helped to write, direct and develop Christmas plays for the Sunday School Department. She served as Sunday School Superintendent. She helped to organize summer outings after the conclusion of Vacation Bible School.

From 1983 to 1994, she directed an acapella gospel group called the “Gospel Sensations”. This group received singing engagements throughout Central Virginia. This group had members from many surroundings churches, totaling over 20 members. Her civic and social commitment allowed her to become affiliated with the Eastern Stars Organization, as well as the Heroines of Jericho, where she served as the president, “Most Ancient Matron” from 1992 to 1993. She also held membership in the American Business Womens Association from 1977 to 1995. She served as President from 1985 to 1986. She directed and arranged musical selections for the Male Chorus of Metropolitan from 1991 to 2016. She directed and taught three-part harmony for the Sanctuary Choir from 1995 to 2016.

It was an honor for her to receive recognition of educational achievements, as she was honored as the 2009 “Yearbook Award” Honoree. This award chronicled highlights of 30 years of service in education. The highlight of this recognition was given as former students who had become teachers or principals, reflected on positive learning opportunities they remembered. From all of life’s achievements, Sherri values her spiritual growth more than words can say. “Without God, I never could have made it.

After being inspired to develop an original musical play for Middle Schoolers from the topic of “Human Relations,” Principal Melvin Alsbrooks encouraged her to travel to other elementary schools in the county. After this musical was presented at Sunnyside, performances starring local students were presented at McKenney Elementary, Rohoic Elementary, Dinwiddle Elementary and Midway Elementary. This play encouraged students to learn that real growth takes time, patience and love.

Sherri also served as Vice President and President of the Appomattox Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association. She served as President from 1985-1986. She also served as President, “Most Ancient Matron,” of the Heroines of Jericho,” Jeshua Court #4, in 1979. This experience was rewarding and fulfilling in many ways.
