Staff Sgt. Moody of Richmond, Va., was a 1994 graduate of Meadowbrook High School, Chesterfield, Va. Three years later in 1997 he enlisted in the Army. He was a tank commander whose honors include two Army Commendation medals, two Army Achievement medals and two Presidential Unit Citation awards. Moody had two Global War on Terror expeditionary medals and an Iraqi campaign medal, as well as medals for service in Southwest Asia and in the global war on terrorism. He spent a tour of duty at Scheweinfurt, Germany with a six month combat deployment to Kosovo, Bosnia. He was serving his third combat deployment in Iraq at the time of his death. Michael spent his teenage years in Chesterfield County, Va. At an early age he joined Broad Rock Baptist Church, Richmond, Va. and continuously worshiped in other churches as he moved from state to state. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Eugene Moody and Virginia Moody-Jones and maternal grandparents, Thomas and Charlene Mason. He died in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by insurgents using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire at age 31.
