During the Second World War, Yamahata was an army staff photographer. Within a short time following the atomic blast at Nagasaki, he was one of three men assigned to document its effects. While methodically recording an extensive collection of images, he passed through areas of high radiation. This exposure likely resulted in his eventually developing a terminal malignancy.
