Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1854 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, when the Civil War started he was serving as a 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Quartermaster of the 6th United States Regular Infantry. His subsequent war service would be entirely as a Quartermaster. Promoted up to Lieutenant Colonel, he served in succession as Chief Quartermaster on the staff of Major General Edwin V. Sumner, as Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Potomac's Cavalry Corps, as Chief Quartermaster of the Washington DC Cavalry Bureau, and finally as Chief Quartermaster on the staff of Major General Edward R.S. Camby. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious service in the Quartermaster's Department during the War". After the war he was promoted to full rank Brigadier General, and served as Quartermaster General of the United States Army until his retirement in 1897.
